The Freedom Series
The Freedom Series explores four pivotal moments in the struggle for racial justice in America using the history of Negro Spirituals from 1865 through today. Many of these African American work songs embedded coded messages in the lyrics that helped guide runaways to freedom. Later, they were popularized by the Fisk University Jubilee Singers and by Marian Anderson's Lincoln Memorial Concert of 1939, helping to catapult the fight for racial justice into the center of American discourse. The Spirituals' legacy continues to strike a chord today.
